Concealed-carry permit expiring? Pennsylvania grants a new extension under COVID.

Pennsylvania permits to carry concealed firearms that are expiring this spring are now valid through June, Pennsylvania State Police announced.

This is the sixth such extension granted by Gov. Tom Wolf during the coronavirus pandemic, and applies to permits expiring March 19 or later. The previous extension was set to expire March 31.

“The extension of license-to-carry permit expiration dates is necessary due to the closure of some county courthouses and sheriff’s offices, as well as other ongoing COVID-19 mitigation efforts,” state police said in a news release.

Pennsylvania allows adults ages 21 and older to apply for a license to carry firearms by submitting a completed application to the sheriff of the county in which they reside, or if they live in Philadelphia to the police chief. That opens a 45-day window to investigate and determine an individual’s eligibility to be issued a license, which is valid for five years.

A license is required to carry a firearm concealed on one’s person or in a vehicle. Carrying a concealed firearm, except in their home or fixed place of business, without a valid and lawfully issued license is a felony.
